Duff College, Calcutta

This generous classical building was constructed in 1857 on the instruction of Scottish missionary Alexander Duff. In recent times Duff College has fallen into disuse and is now in poor condition. Working in collaboration with the West Bengal Heritage Commission, the owner of the building is now keen to repair the historic fabric and convert this heritage asset to a new use, possibly as a conservation institute.

The Trust is looking to provide technical, training and professional support to enable the locally based architects, Alleya & Associates, to prepare and deliver a scheme which attains the highest conservation standards.  It is hoped that this project might serve to draw attention to the heritage value of North Calcutta’s remarkable collection of historic buildings and demonstrate that conversion to viable new uses can be achieved with minimal detraction from the building’s historic significance.
